Jimmyteens.tv is a unique project – supported by the teenage cancer trust (registered charity 1062559) that provides a ‘platform’ for young people affected by cancer. The number of young people(13 – 24) affected by cancer is truly staggering – over 2000 cases each year with cancer now the most common cause of non-accidental death in young people.
The jimmyteens.tv project uses the Internet to broadcast (from its own fully equipped) TV studio) live programmes (including workshops / discussions and personal TV shows) as well as ‘streaming’ films made by affected young people.
However, the ‘site’ is much more than just a place where young people can go to find out information but a ‘platform’ where young people affected by cancer can get involved in producing their own films and programmes.
Started by TV documentary maker Mark Wilkinson, jimmyteens.tv was born following the showing of Mark’s film ‘To Courtney With Love’ for the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4575001.stm
Mark suggested giving young people affected by cancer a video camera so they could produce their own video diary, animation, whatever they wanted as long as it was something creative and had something to do with their cancer journey.
Initially fully funded by Candlelighters, a local cancer charity, the project is now partnered by the Teenage Cancer Trust and now covers the whole of the UK (and, of course, can be seen throughout the world). Young people are provided with video cameras to make their own programmes and they also have access to the TV studio located in Sheffield.
So how can you help? The project would be delighted to hear from you if you feel you can provide support at any level. Have a look at their web site www.jimmyteens.tv and if interested give Mark Wilkinson a ring on (0114) 290 3609
